purpose.â
Lady Azura shrugged and turned to Lily. âIâm sorry,my dear,â she said to her. âBut I fear we will not be successful tonight.â
Lily looked disappointed, but also a little impressed. âSo Saraâs powers are so strong that she can cancel yours out?â
âI wouldnât put it that way,â Lady Azura said drily. âThough Saraâs powers are indeed very strong. But I suspect what is happening here is that Sara is, perhaps unintentionally, preventing the spirits from being able to join us simply because she does not want them to. Sheâs not comfortable with this séance. The vibes in this room are all wrong.â
I couldnât tell if Lady Azura was annoyed at me or not. The look on her face was hard to read as she continued talking to Lily. âI believe that I was nearly successful in conjuring these spirits, but they do not feel welcome hereââI started to protest, and she silenced me with a lookââwhether that is intentional or not on Saraâs part. But they can sense it. As a result, they are stuck. Hesitant to come all the way in. Like a crowded doctorâs waiting room. The spirits are lined up and ready to come in, but the doctor isnât seeing patients.â
A doctorâs waiting room? This made no sense tome. I wondered if maybe Lady Azura was just making up excuses for not being able to conjure the celebrity spirits Lily had asked for. But a small part of me wondered if I had really blocked them. Could I do that? If I was being really honest, I had to admit that I didnât want them here. Didnât want to do a séance with my best friend and my great-grandmother just for fun. I just wasnât comfortable with it.
I could tell Lily was disappointed, and I felt bad about it. âIâm sorry, Lil,â I said. âIf I was doing that, I didnât do it on purpose.â
Lady Azura clasped my hand. âWe believe you, my dear,â she said kindly. âDonât we, Lily?â
Lily smiled at me and nodded. âNo worries, Sara. I think itâs totally cool anyway. Thanks for trying, Lady Azura.â
When Lady Azura didnât answer, I looked at her and saw she had walked over to the cabinet where she stored her crystals. âI could also be wrong about the origin of the block,â she said distractedly as she carefully peered at some crystals on the shelf. âI sense a tremendous disturbance in the atmosphere.â
âWhat kind of disturbance?â asked Lily.
âIt feels weather related,â Lady Azura replied as she laid a few crystals out on the table. âIt is coming on very quickly, though. I think perhaps a storm is brewing outside.â
A storm? Well, that was no big deal. âWell, I guess that makes me feel better, that itâs not all my doing,â I said.
Lily stood up. âLike I said, no worries,â she repeated, playfully tapping me on my shoulder. âI donât know what I would have said to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers anyway! Come on. Letâs go upstairs and get ready for bed.â
We thanked Lady Azura and headed out into the hallway. My dad was coming down the front stairs.
âOh, good,â he said, noticing us right away. âI was coming to look for you. Thereâs a storm coming up the coast thatâs supposed to make a turn to the west and may head straight for us over the weekend.â
âA big one?â asked Lily. âLike one that would cause atmospheric disturbances?â
My dad furrowed his brow and grinned at her good-naturedly. âCould be, Lil,â he said. âRight now itâs out to sea and categorized as a full-fledgedhurricane. Hurricane Seymour, theyâre calling it. The storm is still quite far south and east of us, and they think it will be downgraded to a tropical storm by Sunday morning,â he said. âStill, people in these parts donât play around
