knowing that I had pepper spray in my pocket if I could just get to it, I didn’t panic as they moved me along, all of them looking relaxed and like nothing was going on. We came up to an SUV, dark with tinted windows, and Drake was waiting there, staring at me as he inhaled from a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

He smiled at me. “I thought maybe I should take charge, since you seemed indecisive and I know you want this.” He tugged open the door to the back seat, and I felt my heart skip a beat. I didn’t move forward, but I reached for my pocket, and the two men on either side of me wrenched my arms back, wrapping them in a rope and binding them.

“Be gentle,” Drake barked, his voice a low growl as if he was angry at them, and there was sharp intensity in his eyes that terrified me. “And get her eyes.” That’s when the panic began to rise, like bile in my throat. The cloth came down, and I shook my head, but these men were far too strong. They had me tied, blindfolded, and in the back seat, pulling out of the parking garage, in a matter of less than a minute.

The SUV slowed and turned, and I heard the crunch of gravel or rocks beneath the tires. Where were we going? If only I could have seen, I might have felt more comfortable, despite having been kidnapped. The worst that would happen, I was sure, was that I would be forced into sharing my body with Drake, and if I didn’t act as though I was afraid, as if I wanted it, they wouldn’t hurt me. They wouldn’t consider it rape if they thought it was consensual. I was far more willing to preserve my life than my virginity.

I took long, deep breaths, blowing them out as I counted to ten, and the wheels came to a rest. The engine cut, and car doors opened. I felt a gentle grip on my arm as I was pulled from the car, and I would have stumbled on the uneven ground covered in rocks had strong arms not held me and righted me. I had the impression that, under any other circumstances, the nearness of a man who smelled of leaves and dirt with so much strength might have been utterly exciting. Now, it was intriguing, especially the gentleness of his touch, but it was also causing me a lot of anxiety, especially since I couldn’t see who it was.

I was led forward, and magically, I didn’t trip or stumble anymore, though the ground was definitely uneven, and suddenly, the incredible darkness surrounding me changed. There was some sort of light source ahead of me, making the blindfold less intimidating, and as the heat blasted into my face, I realized it must be a camp fire.

I heard snuffling sounds and frowned, no clue what could be making the noises, and I recalled images of the fantasy novels I read as a small girl, where the virgin was offered as a sacrifice to the dragon. I certainly didn’t believe in dragons, but it seemed a crazy coincidence after the taunting conversation with a man who happened to be called Drake.

A tug at the back of my head jerked my neck, but the blindfold fell to the ground, and I blinked against the sudden brightness of the flames, thankful to be able to see but having difficulty adjusting after the long darkness. And as I finally saw my surroundings, I had to hold back a scream.

I bit my lip so hard I tasted blood, and the snuffling grew louder as men walked circles around me, sniffing the air with flared nostrils and bright emerald eyes that shone like the jewels in the firelight. Beyond them, several wolves – beautiful with full gray and white fur and amber eyes – stalked around the fire. But the thing that told me I had to have been drugged and was hallucinating was also the source of rabid fear, eating at me from the inside out.

Beasts, halfway between man and wolf, gnashed razor sharp teeth as they stood on two legs, wearing clothes but brandishing four-inch claws and sprouting the wolfish fur from various parts of their bodies. I shivered as hands fell on my shoulders from behind,
