the couple who was celebrating their anniversary.
âI just love how detailed you are,â Charlotte said after they had spent twenty minutes talking. âItâs been a while since Iâve had my cake person be as interested in the event as I am.â
Sydney smiled. Common first-timer comment. âWell, our goal is not just to give you a cake. Anybody can do that. But this is a special eventâan anniversary. A day when two people are remembering one of the most significant days in their lives. Reliving that memory through the anniversary party is a special experience, and the cake should add to that experience. Thatâs why I asked about the theme and the venue and the couple, because the cake should reflect all of those things and help to draw all those special parts together.â
When she was done with her speech, Charlotte was grinning from ear to ear.
Charlotte shook her head. âYou just reminded me why I got into the event-planning business so many years ago. Sometimes I get so busy and so lost in the routine and forget itâs about creating that experience.â
âI know what you mean,â Sydney said. âThatâs why weâve kept Decadent so small. Even though thereâs always the opportunity to go bigger, we never wanted to become a cake factory. It sounds corny, but we want to make sure every customer feels like their cake, and their order, is the most important.â
Charlotte leaned in with a smile. âTrust me, I already feel that way.â
âGood,â Sydney said, wiggling her eyebrows. âNow for the fun part. Picking the cake design.â
With a touch of the screen, Sydney began to show Charlotte all the different types of cakes they had done and all the options available to her. Sydney bit back a smile as Charlotte slowly but surely relieved Sydney of the iPad and began scrolling through the diverse inventory of cakes and pastry arrangements.
âOK, so I have a confession to make,â Charlotte said suddenly, putting the iPad down.
Sydney raised an eyebrow. âOK.â
âYou got recommended to me by . . . someone. And I said I would check you out, but I didnât really think you would be this . . . this . . . amazing!â She sighed. âSo I already decided on the design I want.â
She pulled out a picture clipped from a magazine and laid it in front of Sydney.
âAnd I already showed this to my partner; she liked it, so she just told me to go with whoever could make this. But now that Iâve seen what you can do, I donât want this one anymore.â
Sydney looked over the picture of a two-tier round cake iced with marzipan and beautifully designed with gold trim. It was a bit too wedding cakey for Sydney, but she could understand why people would go for it.
âSo?âCharlotte pressed, a look of concern on her face. âWhat can you do?â
âWell,â Sydney said slowly. âIf you want this cake, I can make it for you. But this cake is more of a wedding cake than an anniversary cake. Also, thereâs nothing that says you have to follow this rule, but gold is usually for fiftieth anniversaries. I would go with a silver trim for you for your twenty-fifth event.â
âOK, Iâm liking that,â Charlotte said. âTell me more.â
Sydney went on to suggest they go with a three-tiered square cake designed to look like silver-and-white gift boxes stacked on top of each other. The design was simple, clean, and elegant, which fit the conservative, traditional nature of the couple Charlotte had described to her.
Sydney got Wendy to bring out a slice of their two-layer vanilla white cake with buttercream filling for Charlotte to sample and also boxed up a slice for her to take away. By the time they were done, Charlotte couldnât stop talking about how glad she was she had come in.
âIâll call and confirm later this evening, but I am almost positive
