trepidation on her friendsâ faces. Trying not to laugh, Erica said, âThatâs right,â and she was proud of how cool she soundedâas if the idea didnât give her a little apprehension herself.
âBut with Ian Conrad ?â
Ericaâs reaction had been the same as Asiaâs, but she shrugged. âYeah, so? Whatâs wrong with Ian?â
With a worried look, Becky said, âNothingâs wrong with him, exactly.â
Asia agreed. âNope. Not a thing.â
Fidgeting, glancing at Asia, Becky said, âExcept that heâs, well . . .â
âEnormous,â Asia supplied.
Becky nodded. âYes, enormous. Perfect description. And maybe . . .â She searched for the new word.
âForceful.â
âExactly. Very forceful.â Becky looked quite concerned by that fact.
Maintaining her lazy pose, Erica looked first at Asia, then Becky. âHeâs so quiet, how do you know heâs forceful?â
Asia pushed back her long brown hair and propped her chin on a fist. âMaybe itâs because heâs so quiet, and still everything gets done. Heâll have some guys start working on wiring something and if they donât get it right, he doesnât say a word, he just has this . . . look.â
âHe does have a look,â Becky said.
Asia shivered. âAll the new guys stammer around him.â
âSo do the women,â Becky confided. âIâve heard them asking him out, coming on to him. And you know what he does?â
Despite herself, Erica was fascinated. âNo, what does he do?â
âHe gets this little smile and this real gentle look in his eyes and, oh, man, itâs . . .â
âDevastating.â Asia sighed.
âAnd then . . .â Becky bit her bottom lip, building the suspense.
âThen?â Erica prompted her.
âHe says no.â
âNo?â
âThatâs right, no. He turns all the women down.â
Erica snorted. Ian Conrad was not a monk, and he sure didnât strike her as the type who favored celibacy. The man oozed sexuality out of every pore. âLike Iâm supposed to believe that?â
âItâs true. Ask them. Yesterday in the ladiesâ room they were speculating about whether or not heâs gay.â
After a disgruntled huff, Asia rolled her eyes. âWounded vanity. Just because a guyâs selective . . .â
Erica started laughing. Sometimes her friends were downright nuts. âI had no idea you two had taken so much notice of him. And here youâre both supposed to be happily involved women.â
âWe noticed you noticing,â Becky explained, âso naturally we paid closer attention.â
Erica studied her two best friendsâher two guilty best friends. âAnd then you sicced Cameron and George on Ian to set me up because you thought Iâd need help with that?â
Asia flattened back in her chair. âNo way! We told you that was an accident. George was just talking about itââ
âAbout me. â
âYeah.â Asia grinned. âBut you give them both such a hard time, you know theyâre dying to see how this turns out for you.â
âTheyâre dying to see me get my comeuppance, you mean.â
âNot true.â Becky appeared affronted by such an idea. âGeorge is actually a little worried about you.â
âWorried? Why?â
Beckyâs voice dropped to a whisper. âIan makes everyone nervous. He wouldnât have been my choice for you.â
Damn, if they kept this up, she was going to get more nervous. And she was plenty anxious enough already without any added help.
Hoping to convince herself as well as her two friends, Erica boasted, âI can handle Ian, donât you worry about that. He might seem like the big, quiet, intimidating type, but heâs still just a man, and like all men, heâllââ
Becky suddenly
