home?â
Julia arched a brow at Rafe.
With a sheepish jerk of one shoulder, Rafe said, âWell, Ethanâs okay. Heâs the one Audra needs to marry.â
âIâd be proud to marry you, Audra.â Seth sat down on the ground and started pulling off one of his boots. âItâs more fun in the caves barefoot. The rocks are nice and cold. Ethan, get Maggieâs shoes off.â
Ethan swallowed so hard, Audra thought he must feel a noose tightening around his neck. âMaybe she could be our housekeeper,â he ventured.
Audra scowled at him. âI canât live in a house with two unmarried men.â
âWhy not?â Ethan looked offended.
The idiot.
âWeâre decent men. We wouldnât treat you wrong.â
âAs long as the food was good.â Seth was tugging on his sock. If he got his feet stripped down and headed for the cave, Audra decided sheâd just let him go and live in there forever. But without Maggie. She didnât have a baby in her arms, which left her free to punch someone. Her only problem was deciding who.
âNo, you need to marry her.â Rafe pulled his hat off his head. Audra sincerely hoped his hatband was too tight and that would explain his idiocy. âIt donât make no sense to put it off. Youâre bound to marry her eventually.â
âWhy would I do a thing like that?â Ethan shifted Maggie on his hip. She grinned at him and pulled his hat off his head and swatted him in the face.
âBecause sheâs young and beautiful, and sheâs taking care of your house.â Rafeâs voice rose as if he was sick and tired of everyone not falling in with his plan. âSheâll be cooking and sewing for you, and youâll be supporting her. Maggie already treats you like youâre her pa. And youâre bound to figure out sheâs your wife in every way except you canât sleep in her bed at night.â
Utter silence cut through the group. Ethanâs eyes swung to Audra.
Audra was pretty sure either her cheeks had caught fire or she was turning a ridiculous shade of red. Julia bit her lip, so maybe she had something to say but thought better of it. Sethâs toes were wiggling and distracting him.
Maggie swatted Ethan again and said, âPapa.â
âIâll take the housekeeper job.â Audra said it quick to forestall Rafeâs charming proposal. And to get Ethan to quit looking at her.
Then after sheâd said it, it sounded a little like she was angling to get herself into Ethanâs house.
âNope, you canât live in a house with two unmarried men.â Rafe crossed his arms. âRide on into town now and get it over and done. The parson is still around. We saw him.â
âRafe Kincaid!â A voice Audra had never heard before came from her lips. âYou need to quit talking. Now! Iâm not letting you order me to get married to anyone and especially not to your grinning fool of a brother.â
âNow listen here.â Ethan shifted Maggie to his other side. âThereâs no call for you to keep calling me aââ
âWhose side are you on?â Audra snapped.
Ethan fell silent.
âAnd if Iâm the housekeeper, I can not live in a house with two unmarried men. You and Seth have to move out.â
âMove out?â Ethanâs brows shot up. âWhatâs the point of having a housekeeper if we donât have a house?â
âHeâs got a point, Audra.â Seth looked up from the ground and smiled. âIâm looking forward to getting home. I donât want to move out.â
âWell, youâre doomed to be disappointed then.â Audra preferred to be kinder to Seth. She had a lot of compassion for him. But right now kindness was beyond her. And her main compassion was for herself. Somehow sheâd dug deep, despite her near panic over Maggie, while sheâd talked to Seth.
