and severing the connection. I could do nothing but sit and wait for her to return with a plan.
Each day that I waited Aislen grew weaker and weaker slowly fading away, while her sisters flourished and became fatter and fatter. The meal that they made out of the infants seemed to sustain them for a while and now they were pacified by Despina’s blood. It would only be a matter of time before Despina would send the wolves out again to steal more children. I knew Aislen needed blood, she needed it to survive, but she could never kill a child.
Run
Filled with the blood of half the town, Despina knew she had to move on, so she set out on her own to find a new place beaming with life that she could destroy, leaving her pet Storm to lead us. This was my opportunity to get Aislen out once and for all. Mayor David Raymond was furious and vengeful. He was an opportunist, exploiting the fears of the people of Shadow Falls to spurn his political agenda. He was short and stocky like a modern day napoleon and when he spoke he did so with power and authority.
“We must free this place from the tyranny of the wolves ” he said, in one of his statements to the press.
“They are animals for Christ sake and we have let them transform us in to a bunch of scared children” he cried in another.
“We have guns and silver bullets and those dirty beasts, are no match for human intelligence!” he stated with a raised fist, during a television interview as though he had signaled a war to ensue.
My heart sank into my stomach as I listened to the broadcast. The Mayor had launched an all out war against us and people were buying into his tirades.
The protection of the women was our first priority and we could not risk engaging the humans as they fought to annihilate us. Storm was adamant that we stayed close to the mine, refraining from hunting close to the town. As the days progressed our dance with death intensified and several times we came close to falling victim to a fatal shot. One such time was a few days earlier, when one of the younger wolves, Rafe was chasing after a deer, he was unaware that he was being hunted by a trigger happy hunter eager to snag his first wolf kill. As Rafe pounced on the unsuspecting creature that stopped to get a cool drink from a nearby brook, the sound of the premature release of the rifle rung through the forest sending the deer darting off to safety denying Rafe the satisfaction of killing it. The bullet zinged past his nose, close enough for him to catch a whiff of the gun power on the warm silver bullet and feel the heat singe his nostrils. Rafe had escaped almost certain death, had the hunter’s aim been more accurate, the bullet would have met with his head, exploding the contents of his skull. It was a close call. Rafe ran back to the mine to let the others know what had happened. It was the first of many close calls that almost crippled us. We remained elusive however and this infuriated Mayor David, since despite his best efforts he was unable to have a single wolf killed. He knew that if he was unable to infiltrate our sanctuary the confidence of the people would dwindle. The people wanted revenge for the stolen babies and the Mayor had yet to produce the head of a single wolf. The almost sent him mad.
The pack gathered around a wooden stump amidst the forest. Storm took control of the floor again.
“ They have figured out our weakness ” he said in a shrill voice, glaring into the eyes of twenty or so of us.
“We have to do something, if we stay here and do nothing, we are like sitting ducks” said Ruben.
Ruben was a young headstrong teenage wolf, barely even a man. His slender frame betrayed the power that he wielded as a werewolf. Although I hated Despina for the madness she unleashed upon us, it was becoming more apparent that Despina was right and that we needed to stop cowering behind the trees of the forest and come out into the open as werewolves. We needed to demonstrate
