big bed, covered up with blankets. A glass of orange juice sat on the bedside table. What the hell happened? And where the hell am I?
Memories came flooding back. She was at Carlo’s...they’d had mind-blowing sex...he’d bitten her. Roxanne’s hand flew to her neck and then she remembered. She tore the sheet away from her body, looking down at her breast, expecting to find it chewed to a pulp. But all she could find were two tiny pinpricks, already fading.
She lay back on the pillows. Where was Carlo? Was it daylight, was he sleeping in his crypt or coffin or whatever he slept in during the day? Vamp apartments rarely had windows and if they did, they were usually covered with shutters or heavy drapes.
A buzzing sound startled her. She looked over and saw her device on the table. Frowning, she picked it up. She glanced at the time; it was only early morning, hours from dawn. She scrolled to her messages, blanching at what she saw. Her contract with Carlo had been cancelled, marked as incomplete. Shit, I fucked this one up. Passing out once was bad; passing out twice was too much. She scrolled quickly to the credits, hoping against hope she’d at least get paid for a feed/fuck, since he had done both.
What she saw made her gasp; there were more credits in her account than she’d ever seen, far more than she’d ever had in her life. Her head was spinning with this new information when another message flashed; her entire contract with the company had been voided. She was unemployed. None of this made any sense.
As she was trying to decide what to do, the bedroom door opened and Carlo entered. He was wearing a black t-shirt and loose sweatpants, looking relaxed and calm. He sat on the edge of the bed, looking at Roxanne.
“How are you feeling?” He reached out and brushed a strand of hair from her face. He looked down and noticed her device in her hand.
“I was hoping I’d get here before you read those. I have some explaining to do.” He looked concerned, embarrassed and a little vulnerable; emotions Roxanne had never seen a vampire display. He reached over and took the device from her, setting it on the bedside table. He took on hand in his.
“Roxanne, you have given me the most incredible experience I’ve ever had. You were self-less and kind, something I didn’t expect, even if this was a business deal.” Roxanne nodded, not really understanding.
“And there is no fancy way to say this, so I’ll just come to the point. I’d like you to stay here, with me. Not as a slave or pet or plaything, but as a person in your own right, to come and go as you please, but to be my companion. If that’s agreeable with you.”
Roxanne was stunned. There were again unfamiliar emotions churning inside, and she finally recognized one: past the hurt of loss, the anger at the betrayal of other men, she found a tiny flame of compassion and hope.
And the sex would sure be worth it. She sighed inwardly; Roxie the cold-hearted hooker.
She pushed that thought away. Maybe it was time to give up the life of a hooker and maybe this was a way to start.
She looked up at Carlo. “I agree. I’ll stay.” She blew out a breath. And thought: What have I just signed up for?
