weâre going to find out who it is.â
Jess was excited. âWeâll be like detectives!â she said. âLetâs look for clues.â
Elly shook her head. She was hungry. âLetâs have lunch first. You should never look for clues on an empty stomach.â
She opened her backpack and pulled out a large, glittery blue box.
âWhatâs that?â asked Jess curiously. It looked a bit like a lunch box with a big dial on top.
âItâs a Wunch-Box,â explained Elly. âWunch stands for Whatever U Need Culinary Holder,â she said, and showed Jess how the box worked.
On the dial are numerous lunchtime options â from salad roll to pizza slices. All you have to do is turn the dial to what you want for lunch and when you open the box there it is, waiting for you.
âYou put the ingredient powder in here,â said Elly, opening up a flap on the side. âAnd you have to charge it up once a week.â
âThatâs a cool invention,â said Jess. She liked her mumâs pottery but she couldnât help wishing that she were an inventor, like Ellyâs mum.
âItâs good if itâs working properly,â said Elly. Sheâd had trouble with her Wunch-Box before and today it was looking particularly dented and scratched.
Elly felt like tomato soup. But when she tried turning the dial she found it wouldnât budge from cupcakes.
âThatâs not so bad,â said Jess, looking at the options on the dial. âIt couldâve been stuck on olive and anchovy pikelets.â
Elly sighed. Cupcakes were fine if you were in the mood for them. But she felt like tomato soup. Unfortunately, it looked like it was cupcakes or nothing. There was nothing she could do but click the âMake Lunch!â button, and wait.
A few moments later, steam began to rise from the Wunch-Box and the smell of baking filled the air. The Fairy Club girls looked up when the cupcake smell wafted over. Caitlin looked at Elly and Jess curiously. Elly waved her hands around, hoping to make the smell go away.
Caitlin smiled and waved back. âYour lunch smells great!â she called.
âThanks!â Elly called back.
âYou know,â Elly said to Jess, âI donât think Caitlinâs all that bad.â
Jess shrugged. âSheâs not as bad as most of the Fairy Club girls, I guess.â
âWhat exactly is Fairy Club?â asked Elly.
âI guess they just sit around talking about fairies,â Jess said. Then she looked quickly at Elly. âNot cool fairies like you, of course. Sucky fairies.â
Elly nodded. She knew all about sucky fairy stuff.
âThen on the weekend they go to each otherâs houses and dress up and pretend theyâre fairies,â continued Jess, rolling her eyes. âItâs so dumb.â
Jess seemed to know a lot about Fairy Club. âHave you ever been?â Elly asked her.
Jess looked embarrassed. âWell, no,â she said. âBut Iâm glad. I wouldnât want to go anyway. Iâd rather spend my spare time inventing a flying machine.â
Elly opened the lunch box and a row of perfect cupcakes was sitting inside, covered in chocolate icing and coloured sprinkles. She offered one to Jess.
âWow!â said Jess, taking one. âThey look great.â
âLet me try mine first,â warned Elly, sniffing her cake. âSometimes the Wunch-Box food isnât quite right. Once I had a banana that tasted like salami. It was so disgusting.â Elly took a cautious bite and smiled. This time, at least, the cupcake was perfect.
Jess took a big bite of hers. âThese are great!â she said. She picked up the Wunch Box and examined it closely. âMaybe I could turn my lunch box into one of these. What is the ingredient powder made of?â
âKitchen dust,â said Elly.
Jess spat out a mouthful of cake. âDust?â she
