started walking away. “I’m going to arrange transport for the bodies. I’ll make sure there’s a rush put on the toxicology screen.”
Macy turned her attention to Carla and Lloyd Spencer again. They were lying with their arms by their sides, palms up. Since it was probably drugs that killed them it was difficult to believe they’d have the wherewithal to die in such similar poses. She squatted down low. There were no apparent signs of struggle. With a gloved hand she lifted Lloyd’s cowboy boot. There was gravel imbedded in the back of the heel. The same was not true of Carla’s trainers. Macy pivoted and looked at the van. It was about ten yards away.
â€œI think they died in the van. Lloyd was dragged across the pavement and Carla was carried.”
â€œYou don’t think this is an accidental overdose?” said Aiden.
â€œI’m not ruling it out, but they’ve been moved. Could mean they died a little earlier this morning. It certainly points to a third party. There may have been someone else involved in Long’s kidnapping.” Macy peeled off her gloves. “We’ll have to wait for an autopsy report to tell us more.”
As she stood up her vision blurred. She reached for Aiden and he was there.
Aiden kept his voice low. “You okay? You’re looking a little pale.”
â€œI’m not going to lie. I’m struggling.”
He righted her and let go. “I’d give you a hug if I could.”
    â€œI appreciate the sentiment.”
â€œAre you sure it’s a good idea going back to work so soon?”
Her eyes flicked to Gina. “Don’t worry, I’m in good hands.”
    â€œShould I be jealous?”
    â€œMost definitely. Gina’s a hottie.”
â€œIf you don’t need me here I’m going to head off. There’s a meeting I have to get to.”
Macy walked him to his vehicle. “So,” she said, checking to make sure that no one was in earshot. “I’ll see you later on tonight?”
â€œJust give me a shout when you’re free and I’ll come pick you up at your hotel.”
â€œDo you still feel like making dinner?”
â€œHeading to the river now. Hopefully, I’ll catch something.”
â€œI thought you said you had a meeting.”
â€œI do. The mayor is coming with me.” He raised his voice so he could be heard. “It was a pleasure seeing you again, Detective Greeley.”
    â€œAre you kidding me?”
He leaned in and spoke in a whisper. “How was that for acting?”
â€œI wouldn’t give up your day job just yet.”

Police Chief Lou Turner pulled into the parking lot in his SUV as Macy was peering in the front windows of the stolen van. She’d been told on more than one occasion that Lou had a wicked sense of humor and liked nothing more than to fish and hang out with friends he’d known since childhood. Macy couldn’t imagine it. Since they’d met in the hours following Philip Long’s kidnapping he’d hadn’t smiled once, but then again, she could hardly blame him, given the circumstances.
Lou asked after her health before turning his attention to Carla and Lloyd. He stared at them for a long time before speaking.
â€œI can’t say that I’m surprised that they ended up this way, but I am a little taken aback that they were involved in Philip’s kidnapping.”
    â€œDid they have any children?”
â€œAn older boy in his teens from Carla’s first marriage and two younger ones who are in foster care. There’s extended family, but no one was able to take them in.”
    â€œThat’s sad.”
â€œCarla was trying to stay clean though. Last time we spoke she seemed determined to get her kids back.”
â€œI want to know where Carla was attending rehab. Her therapist might have some insight. It’s also possible that
