started walking away. âIâm going to arrange transport for the bodies. Iâll make sure thereâs a rush put on the toxicology screen.â
Macy turned her attention to Carla and Lloyd Spencer again. They were lying with their arms by their sides, palms up. Since it was probably drugs that killed them it was difficult to believe theyâd have the wherewithal to die in such similar poses. She squatted down low. There were no apparent signs of struggle. With a gloved hand she lifted Lloydâs cowboy boot. There was gravel imbedded in the back of the heel. The same was not true of Carlaâs trainers. Macy pivoted and looked at the van. It was about ten yards away.
âI think they died in the van. Lloyd was dragged across the pavement and Carla was carried.â
âYou donât think this is an accidental overdose?â said Aiden.
âIâm not ruling it out, but theyâve been moved. Could mean they died a little earlier this morning. It certainly points to a third party. There may have been someone else involved in Longâs kidnapping.â Macy peeled off her gloves. âWeâll have to wait for an autopsy report to tell us more.â
As she stood up her vision blurred. She reached for Aiden and he was there.
Aiden kept his voice low. âYou okay? Youâre looking a little pale.â
âIâm not going to lie. Iâm struggling.â
He righted her and let go. âIâd give you a hug if I could.â
âI appreciate the sentiment.â
âAre you sure itâs a good idea going back to work so soon?â
Her eyes flicked to Gina. âDonât worry, Iâm in good hands.â
âShould I be jealous?â
âMost definitely. Ginaâs a hottie.â
âIf you donât need me here Iâm going to head off. Thereâs a meeting I have to get to.â
Macy walked him to his vehicle. âSo,â she said, checking to make sure that no one was in earshot. âIâll see you later on tonight?â
âJust give me a shout when youâre free and Iâll come pick you up at your hotel.â
âDo you still feel like making dinner?â
âHeading to the river now. Hopefully, Iâll catch something.â
âI thought you said you had a meeting.â
âI do. The mayor is coming with me.â He raised his voice so he could be heard. âIt was a pleasure seeing you again, Detective Greeley.â
âAre you kidding me?â
He leaned in and spoke in a whisper. âHow was that for acting?â
âI wouldnât give up your day job just yet.â

Police Chief Lou Turner pulled into the parking lot in his SUV as Macy was peering in the front windows of the stolen van. Sheâd been told on more than one occasion that Lou had a wicked sense of humor and liked nothing more than to fish and hang out with friends heâd known since childhood. Macy couldnât imagine it. Since theyâd met in the hours following Philip Longâs kidnapping heâd hadnât smiled once, but then again, she could hardly blame him, given the circumstances.
Lou asked after her health before turning his attention to Carla and Lloyd. He stared at them for a long time before speaking.
âI canât say that Iâm surprised that they ended up this way, but I am a little taken aback that they were involved in Philipâs kidnapping.â
âDid they have any children?â
âAn older boy in his teens from Carlaâs first marriage and two younger ones who are in foster care. Thereâs extended family, but no one was able to take them in.â
âThatâs sad.â
âCarla was trying to stay clean though. Last time we spoke she seemed determined to get her kids back.â
âI want to know where Carla was attending rehab. Her therapist might have some insight. Itâs also possible that
