calls.”

Frost shot out his hand and placed it on mine.

“Don’t tell anyone where you are. I don’t know for certain that Vicious wasn’t working with any other wolves. If he wasn’t, you’ll probably be fine to go home in a few days. But if he was… You might have to get out of the state. Out of the country, even.”

    My mouth dropped open.

    “Seriously?”

“Seriously. Your life could be in more danger than we know. Vicious was a lone wolf but he was a legend. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’d been hired by a wolf gang as an enforcer, or even to manage a drug running operation. If he was, they’ll be after you.”

“And what about you? Aren’t they after you?”

    Another smile, tragically beautiful.

    “That goes without saying.”

    New Life?

I stepped outside to call my folks. I live with my parents and my little sister, Erin. It was Erin who picked up.

“Annie!” she screamed in my ear. “Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god! We’ve been worried sick! Where the hell are you? We heard there was a fight at the Cloister Lounge and someone got shot and no one knows where you are!”

“Erin! Erin!” I had to yell back. My little sister, she’s usually pretty excitable but I guess this time, she’d really lost it. Not that I could blame her. “Calm down. You’ve got to calm down, baby girl. I’m okay. Everything’s okay.”

It wasn’t, but that wasn’t the point, now was it?

“Listen. Erin, I need you to listen to me,” I said, sighing in frustration as her frantic pleas for more information continued. “I’m safe. Okay? Can you be quiet for one second?”

“Yes,” she said, finally shutting up. “Yes, I can.”

“Good. Listen, I’m safe. I’m with a friend. He knows the guys who were in the bar, who started the fight. We’re pretty far away now. He… He thinks they might be after me. I’m going to lay low for a while.”

“Annie, we have to call the police! They’re saying you shot someone!”

I choked on my words. What the hell was I supposed to tell her?

“Listen, Erin, sweetie, I can’t tell you anything more. If I’m lucky, I’ll be able to come home in a few days. You can let mom and dad know that I’m okay and that I’ll try and come home as soon as I can. I promise I will.”

“But where are you? Why can’t you come home now?”

“I can’t tell you that just yet.”

“But why not? And who’s the guy you’re with?”

    “I… I can’t tell you that either.”

Erin had started to cry. I’m a sucker for when my little sister starts to cry and I felt tears rising in my eyes too.

“Erin, I need you to be brave for mom and dad, okay? I really, really need you to be brave.”

“Okay,” she whimpered. “I’ll be brave. I… I love you, sis.”

“I love you too, hun. I’ll be home soon. Everything is going to be fine, I promise.”

With that, I hung up the phone. I’ve never felt bad about lying to my little sister, but this was an exception.

When I returned to the room, I found Frost on the bed, watching TV, looking like any other young man at the end of a long night.

I suddenly felt gross. I wanted to take a shower, more than anything else at that very moment—more than I wanted to relive, even, the last three hours or so of my life. More than I wanted to go home.

“I’m going to take a shower,” I announced. He glanced over at me and again, I felt his eyes taking in my body. Is that what this meant? Taking a shower would leave me naked, just in the other room, separated from this powerful beast of a man—literally, a beast of a man—by only a few inches of wood and drywall. What was to stop him from storming in and taking advantage of me?

And what’s more, what was to stop me from wanting that? The idea of being in the shower, nonchalantly minding my own business, only to turn around and find
