have the whole day to themselves without any interruptions. She was starting to feel like they were two ships passing in the night.
At 8:00, Kaine was just about to take Adam to bed when she heard the key turn in the door. "Daddy!" Adam screamed, running into the kitchen. He threw himself into Shane’s arms. "I missed you!"
"I missed you too, buddy," Shane said, easily scooping him up and throwing him in the air. He grinned at Kaine. "I’m sorry, babe. The meeting took forever and I had to finish preparing for the trial on Monday."
"It's ok," she said, hugging him tightly. "I get it."
He kissed her head and wrapped his arm around her. "I love you, Kainie."
"I love you too," she sighed. "Why don’t you play with Adam while I heat up dinner? He can stay up for a bit tonight to spend some time with you."
"Sounds good," he said, swinging Adam onto his shoulders. "Come on, buddy."
Kaine turned on the water and threw the chicken in the oven. She smiled softly at the sound of Shane and Adam playing in the other room. Shane was a wonderful father. As much as she wished he didn’t work as much as he did, she had to admit that he was an amazing husband as well. Everything he did was to make a better life for her and Adam.
Fifteen minutes later, Shane walked back into the kitchen carrying a sleeping Adam. Kaine smiled excitedly. Putting him to sleep was sometimes an hour long chore. As long as he stayed asleep until Shane got him into bed, he would stay down. She held her breath as Shane tiptoed up the stairs. A minute later, he came back downstairs, grinning. "I can’t believe it was that easy. Whenever I’m horny he usually takes forever to fall asleep," he said, grabbing Kaine’s hips and smashing his mouth to hers. "You look hot as hell today."
She giggled. "You’re always horny. And I look like this every day."
"You’re hot as hell every day," he murmured, kissing her neck. "How long until dinner’s ready?"
"Ah...ten minutes," she gasped as Shane lifted her up. She wrapped her legs around him as he carried her upstairs. "That’s enough time for round one," he decided. She laughed as he kicked open the door to the bedroom.
"So are you going to tell me what’s wrong?" Shane asked as they sat down to eat. Kaine looked at him, surprised. "Why do you think something’s wrong?"
"Because of your makeup. I can tell when you’ve been crying. What happened?"
She decided to act like it wasn’t a big deal. "Do you remember Camden Lawson?"
Shane froze with his fork halfway to his mouth.
Shit.
"What about Camden Lawson?" Shane asked coldly.
Kaine cleared her throat, playing with her fork. "He’s back in town. He’s working as a sub at the school."
Shane stared at her, not moving. "Are you fucking kidding me, Kaine?"
She sighed, putting her fork down. "Look, it’s not a big deal. His mom is sick, and he needs the money..."
"He TALKED to you?" Shane yelled.
Kaine’s eyes widened in surprise. "Don’t yell at me, Shane. I didn’t ask him to come back. Josh got mugged, and he’s subbing for him. It’ll just be for a little bit. What do you think is going to happen at school?"
Shane’s face was red. "Hell no, Kaine. He’s subbing for Josh? Working right next to you? I’m gonna kill him."
Kaine had an awful flashback to what had happened in high school the last time Shane was angry at her. She tried to keep the tears from spilling down her face. "Babe, it’s not that big of a deal..."
Shane jumped up, knocking his dish to the floor. Kaine closed her eyes as the plate shattered. "Are you kidding me? Not that big of a deal? Did you forget that he tried to rape you? What do you think would have happened if I hadn’t gotten there in time? What if he ended up killing you? God fucking DAMMIT, Kaine. How can you be so stupid?"
Kaine had enough. She stood up. "Get out."
"Huh?" Shane asked, confused.
"Get the hell out of my house. Before our four year old son hears his father screaming at his mother
