cocking his eyebrow. “Come on. Times a-wastin.”
After getting in the truck and driving down a few back roads, we turned into a gravel driveway. The sun was already low in the evening sky. This is my favorite time of evening in the summer with the different shades of blues, whites and just a hint of pink. We drove for what seemed like forever when he pulled off the gravel into the field headed straight for the tree line. “Um, what are we doing exactly? Was I totally wrong, and in fact, you are the crazy one?”
His laughter filled the cab of the truck as he turned to look at me. “Paranoid much? And no, I’m not crazy. This is actually the back end of our property and just through those trees is the very best view of the sunset you will ever see in this town or maybe anywhere in Texas.”
Just then, we broke through the trees into the most beautiful clearing I have ever seen. We are on a small cliff of sorts that is in the shape of a half moon. I’m speechless as he pulls as close to the edge as he can. Putting the truck in park, he turns to me and confidently states, “See, you’re gonna need another date so you can bring your camera with you for this the next time. Am I right?”
“Oh my goodness, Gentry, I had no idea this kind of view even existed in our town. It’s breathtaking.”
“I thought you might like it. It’s where I used to come to think while growing up and one of the first places I came when I got back into town. It’s a much better view than where I found you the other night.”
“I love it, and yes, I totally wanna come back with my camera, so I guess I can give you a second date under one condition.”
“What’s that, Sunshine?”
“Let’s eat our food out here next time. You didn’t leave us with nearly enough time to enjoy this view!” I huff.
“It’s a deal. I will even cook the food myself. How’s that sound?”
“Oh-mm-gee! You cook, too?”
“I do. I can do lots of wonderful things, Sunshine, lots.”
My goodness, the look he is giving me has my heart racing and my eyes widening. I just sit there staring at his shit-eating grin and wonder what the hell, I mean seriously….
“ Wow, you’re not full of yourself or anything are you? I mean, here I am thinking you're this amazing guy who knows a beautiful sunset when he sees one and can cook, too, then you go and ruin it by tootin' your own horn?” I say shaking my head from side to side. Oh no, he didn’t. There he goes with that hearty laugh that makes my head spin.
“You think I’m amazing, huh?”
“Correction, I thought you were amazing.”
He chuckles “ Well, all jokes aside, I really like you and wanna get to know you. I wanna know all there is to know of Ariana, like what’s your full name? Where were you born? When’s your birthday?”
“Ariana Paige Tate. I was born in Rotan, Texas, on November 2,1991, making me 23 years old which you probably already assumed since Liv and I are best friends. Oh, and my favorite color is purple. What about you, Gentry Sloan? Tell me all your secrets.” I push because really all I wanna know is what he isn’t telling me. I have already questioned Liv about the generic stuff.
“Well, I’m not sure I can give away all my secrets just yet. You already know my last name, and the middle isn’t nearly as awesome as yours, but I will tell you anyway, I guess. Gentry Neal Sloan, Neal is after my Dad. I was born in Dallas on Sept 23,1989, making me a couple of months shy of twenty-six, and my favorite color is blue, if I had to pick.”
The sun has long since gone down while we share little details about each other. It’s effortless conversation, and I feel a comfort with him that I haven’t felt with a guy before. Looking over, I notice he looks tired and ask, “You ready to head back? I know you have a long day ahead of you tomorrow.” He sighs and looks at me with a crooked smile.
“Yeah, as much as I hate for this date to be over, let’s get you
