around and was greeted by the grinning face of his friend Danny Mayfield.
Danny gave Averyâs shoulder a nudge. âDude, I havenât seen you out in forever. Whatâs up with that noise?â
âI dunno.â Avery shrugged. âBeen busy.â
âThatâs a lame-ass excuse of FOGO.â
âWhat the hell is FOGO?â
âFear of going out.â
âOh.â Guilty. âThatâs bullshit.â
âWell then, Mason has been having some kick-ass bonfires at the Broomstick Brewery. Heâs doing a pig roast sometime soon. You should come.â
Avery took a swig of his beer and nodded. âThanks, sounds like a good time.â Avery had helped bartend at the grand opening of the brewery back in October. Sophia had helped out too and theyâd hung around and had fun at the after party.
Danny jammed his thumb over his shoulder. âMe and Colby are playing some pool. Wanna join us?â
âI would but Iâm meeting somebody here,â Avery replied and glanced around again.
âOh, yeah, who?â Danny asked casually but gave him a close look. âAnybody I know?â
âIs there anybody you donât know in Cricket Creek?â Dannyâs family owned Mayfield Marina where his brother Mason built the popular craft brewery.
âWhy do I feel as if youâre evading the question?â Danny tipped his bottle back, and waited.
âIâm meeting Carrie Ann Spencer and Sophia Gordon for a beer.â
âOh?â Danny raised his eyebrows. âSophia? Sheâs one of the sweetest people on the planet. Funny as hell too. She and I bartended the other night at the taproom, and damn, she had me rolling on the floor. Sheâs all quiet, but has these one-liners that come outta nowhere.â
âReally?â Avery asked evenly but felt a flash ofjealousy. âYou do that often?â Damn but his tone had a bit of an edge to it.
âWhoa there.â Danny held up his hands. âDonât get your panties in a wad. Sheâs like a sister to me.â
âMy panties arenât in a wad.â
âOh.â Danny laughed. âSo you wear panties?â
âYeah, thongs.â
âI knew it!â
âWanna see my whale tail?â
âThanks, but Iâll pass.â
Avery gave his friend a chuckle, and then took a swig of his beer.
âNo, seriously, Iâm glad youâre hanging out with her. Sheâs a cute girl.â Danny tilted his head. âI can kinda see you together.â
âDanny, sheâs going back to New York. Iâm not an idiot. Weâre just hanging out.â
Danny shrugged. âWell, her sister, Grace, was going back to London and now sheâs married to my brother. Her mother lives here now and so does her brother Garret when heâs not doinâ that singing show in London. I kinda think she might consider staying given the right reasons, if you know what Iâm sayinâ.â
âI donât know what youâre sayinâ.â
âRight . . .â Danny took a swig of his beer and shrugged. âGeez, donât look at me like that. Iâm just makinâ a personal observation. Look, Iâve got to get back to the game. Itâs cool to see you, though, man.â
âSame here.â
âDonât forget about the pig roast. Iâll text you the date and details.â
âThanks, Danny. We need to get out on the water and fish when the weather warms up.â
âSounds like a plan.â He clanked his bottle to Averyâs. âNow go find your girl.â
âSheâs . . .â Avery was about to protest that Sophia wasnât his
girl
but Danny pivoted and started weaving his way through the crowd.
His girl.
Avery shook hishead. Wow, he had it bad and it must be written all over his damned face. He told himself once again to cool his jets, but then he looked across
