come home?â
He shook his head. âNo wife. My friend and I split before I left home. She didnât like the traveling part of this job.â
âIâm sorry.â Instantly, Tiaâs heart went into sympathy mode. Without thinking, she reached across the table and squeezed his hand reassuringly. A muscle leaped to life under her fingertips as he held on to her hand for a second longer than necessary.
âSome things are meant to end. Patrice and I were one of them.â
âDo you have children?â
âNo. Not yet. But I want a big family. I believe itâs my turn. Are you from the Detroit area?â
Tia nodded. âYes. Born and raised here.â
âWhat about your family?â Chris asked.
Sunshine returned with their drinks, placed the glasses in front of them, and then took their food orders. He added a small basket of bread before making a quiet retreat.
âI come from a medium-sized family.â Tia took a sip from her glass. The lemonade tasted tart and sugary, just the way she liked it. âI have three brothers and one sister. My twin.â
âTwins! That means thereâs another one out there just like you?â
âNo, nothing like me, except for our looks. Niaâs very different.â Tia laughed softly, getting a mental image of her twin with her soft bob and tight, colorful clothes.
Chris took a sip, rolled the wine over his tongue, and then swallowed. âI have a large family also. Big Catholic tribe. There are nine of us. I have five sisters and three brothers.â
Tia blew out a puff of air. âWow! I thought we were a large group.â She tore off a piece of bread and buttered it. âWhere are you from? Adam didnât say much about you. Do you live in Paris?â
He took another sip from his glass. âI know you probably wonât believe this, but there are other cities in France.â
âI know,â Tia admitted bashfully. âBut Paris is the one that comes to mind first.â
âShame on you.â He strummed his finger at her. âNot enough geography while you were in school.â
She laughed. Chris joined in. The rich, warm sound filled the room.
âI grew up in the city of Nantes. Itâs on the west side of France,â Chris explained.
Leaning more comfortably against the vinyl seat, Tia asked, âHow did you end up at Gautier?â
âReynolds recruited me during my final year at the university.â
âAdam said the same thing. Reynolds is a very clever man.â
âYes, he is.â Chris broke off a piece of bread and chewed on it. âReynolds is a major benefactor for the university.â
âDid he go there?â
âYes. But heâs more than a pretty face with a checkbook. He spends time on campus and conducts entrepreneurial workshops for students and faculty.â
âVery nice. I didnât know that.â Definitely more than a pretty face, Tia thought.
âReynolds doesnât brag. He likes things to be quiet.â Chris smiled.
It captivated Tia. She found herself in a momentary daze.
âWhat?â he questioned. âIs there something between my teeth?â
Tia snapped out of her trance and decided to admit the truth. âSorry. You have such a beautiful smile. I couldnât help admiring it.â
âThank you. So do you.â
His compliment filled her with pleasure. Tia sat watching this interesting and very different man.
âTell me, how do you know about this place?â Chris waved a hand around the room.
âIâm a Wayne State graduate. My study group came here for meals sometimes.â
âWeâre going to see this campus after lunch, correct?â
âSure.â
âMerveilleux!â
Sunshine hurried to their booth with an entrée in each hand. He placed a dish on the table in front of Tia and the other before Chris. âThese look really good. Enjoy,â he
