the line at the cash register reached all the way to the back of the room. Thatâs why it took me so long. I had to wait in line.â
Thanks for telling me they had a lot of customers, Hannah thought. It makes me feel much better. Of course she didnât say what she was thinking. Sheâd asked Andrea to report on the competition and that was exactly what her sister was doing. âWhat else did you find out?â
âShawna Lee didnât make her bed last night and sheâs got a see-through peignoir set.â Andrea glanced at Norman and looked a bit embarrassed. âSorry, Norman. I forgot youâre a bachelor. A peignoir set is aâ¦â
âI know what it is,â Norman said quickly.
âYou do? But how do youâ¦?â
âTell us more,â Hannah interrupted, before her sister could stick her foot any further down her throat.
âOkay. Wellâ¦she wears tinted contacts. I knew nobody ever had eyes that green! And she takes diet pills prescribed by a doctor in Minneapolis. Do you want to hear what I found out about Vanessa?â
âSure,â Hannah said, indulging their personal spy.
âSheâs got three raw silk dressing gowns and every single one is printed with magnolia blossoms. She must really have a thing for magnolia blossoms.â
âThatâs interesting, I guess,â Lisa commented.
âBut itâs not really important. The important thing is, Vanessa had at least a dozen pairs of Manolos and they were scattered all over her bedroom floor.â
âWhat are Manolos?â Lisa asked.
âManolo Blahniks. Designer shoes. Very expensive. I think there might have been a couple of pairs of Louboutins mixed in, and maybe a Choo or two, but I didnât get a chance to really look.â
Hannah was amazed. âHow do you know all that? â
âI snooped. Shawna Lee and Vanessa were both busy at the counter and I had Mother hold my place in line.â
â Mother was there?â Hannah gulped out the words. Not only had her not-so-loyal customers deserted her, her own mother was patronizing their rival!
âRelax, Hannah. Mother was doing the same thing I was. Luanne and Carrie were waiting for her back at Grannyâs Attic and she was in line for takeout. They talked about it this morning and they decided to check out your competition.â
âWho else was in there checking out my competition?â Hannah asked the critical question.
âCyril Murphy. He was ordering a box for his mechanics at the garage. Heâs going to let me know what everyone thinks of their baking.â
âThatâs veryâ¦helpful. Anyone else?â
Andrea turned to Lisa. âYour dad was there with Marge. I can see a difference already, Lisa. He didnât have trouble remembering who I was and he mentioned you and Hannah by name. I think those new Alzheimerâs drugs are working.â
âThey seem to be,â Lisa said, looking very happy until she remembered the other part of Andreaâs comment. âWait a minute. What were Dad and Marge doing there? â
âThey were sitting with Herb at a table.â
â My Herb?â
âThatâs right.â
Hannah was beginning to see a pattern and she voiced it as a question. âThey told you they were just checking out our competition?â
âThatâs right! How did you know?â
âJust a guess,â Hannah said, trying not to sound too sarcastic. Every once in a while, Andrea could be incredibly naive. âJust for the record, how many people told you they were there to check out our competition?â
âWellâ¦there was Dick Laughlin, Kate Maschler, Vera Olsen Westcottâ¦sheâs married now, you know. And Stan Kramer, Charlie Jessup, and Doc Bennett. They were sitting at a table together. Babs and Shirley Dubinski were there. They were half finished and they told me that your fudge cupcakes were a lot
