before. âThatâs one of the reasons I love you, Hannah. Youâre always thinking of other people, even when youâre in trouble.â
âBill and I talked before he went back to the station.â Andrea gave Hannahâs hand another squeeze. âIf you need to borrow money, weâll take out a line of home equity on the house.â
Hannah was so touched it took her a moment to find her voice. âI couldnât ask you to do that, not when I know that Vanessa can afford to run their business at a loss for a whole year. Donât even consider it. You and Bill and the kids come first.â
âIâm not married and I donât have kids,â Norman said. âIâve got some savings and Iâll lend you enough to tide you over.â
âThank you, but no,â Hannah said forcefully enough to erase all doubt that sheâd change her mind. âBoth of you are really sweet to offer, but throwing money at the problem wonât help. If our business at The Cookie Jar doesnât pick up by the end of the month, itâs not going to pick up at all.â
âWhat are you going to do if it doesnât?â
âLiquidate. Weâll sell the capital assets and Iâll give Lisa her share in cash. Sheâll be able to find something else, and even if she doesnât, Herbâs got a good job.â
âBut thatâs just awful! Motherâs got money. She couldâ¦â Andrea stopped in mid-sentence after one glance at Hannahâs expression. âOkay. Forget that. Thereâs no way you want to ask Mother. But family is supposed to stick together andâ¦I donât know what else to do! If I could figure out a way to get rid of Shawna Lee and Vanessa, Iâd do it in a flash!â
There was a note of panic in Andreaâs voice that worried Hannah. Her younger sister was really upset. âTake a giant step back and wait for the Southern Peach Cobbler. If itâs good, we have cause to worry. If itâs not, we can relax a little. Then the Magnolia Blossom Bakery is just a flash in the pan and our customers will be back when they get tired of inferior baked goods.â
As if on cue, Lisa appeared bearing four bowls of Peach Cobbler with vanilla ice cream melting in rivulets on the top. âHere you go. I hope you hate it!â
Hannah laughed. Lisa, who never said anything bad about anyone and seldom criticized anything, was already giving the signature dessert a thumbs-down. âDid you taste it?â
âI had a bite in the kitchen, but donât let that influence you. Make up your own minds.â
Andrea raised the spoon to her mouth and took a bite. âThis is really good ice cream.â
âItâs Bridgemanâs. Taste the cobbler.â
Andrea spooned up a bite of cobbler and tasted it. She chewed, swallowed, and shrugged. âItâs funny, but Iâve got the strangest feeling Iâve tasted this somewhere before. And before you ask, todayâs the first time Iâve ever been in the Magnolia Blossom Bakery.â
âBut what do you think of it? Is it good?â
Andrea frowned slightly. âThereâs nothing wrong with it. Itâsâ¦okay.â
âJust okay? â Hannah asked, feeling pleased when Andrea nodded. She tried a spoonful for herself and decided that her sister was right. It was generic peach cobbler, acceptable, but no better than that. âWhat do you think, Norman?â
âIt tastes like the peach cobbler youâd get at a twenty-four-hour coffee shop. Thereâs nothing really wrong with it, but I wouldnât go out of my way to order it again.â
âThen we all agree,â Hannah said, giving a little sigh of relief. âBut this place is empty and theirs is full. If itâs not the baked goods, why have all our customers deserted us for the Magnolia Blossom?â
âDo you think itâs the outfits they wear?â
